“Yogas chitta vritti nirodhah”
Yoga is the stilling the fluctuations of the mind.
Yoga is a 5,000 year old practice that traces back to Indian roots. A great sage who went by the name Maharshi Patanjali collected all of the practices and philosophy into a well known compilation called ‘The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.’ This book serves as a road map, or guide, to living a life of balance, connectedness, and wellness, through the practice of yoga. It was written in Sanskrit, the language of yoga, and is a collection of 196 short yet powerful verses (or sutras).
Sankhya is philosophy of knowledge, of education. It teaches that knowledge is the path to enlightenment. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras help us take what is intellectual and apply it to everyday practices.
Yoga is meant to calm the chatter of our minds. When we cut through the chatter, we learn who we really are. But we are human and the chatter is constant. We forget who we are. Over and over again. We cling to our egos and fears. We even cling to our pleasures and joys. All of this clinging causes us suffering. We see the world through our eyes and mistake that view for reality.
Yoga helps us see the world through an impartial lens. Yoga helps us understand ourselves and others, and in that stillness, we can discover our universal connectedness.
These practices include living a life of non-violence and honesty, not stealing, channeling our energy productively, and not being greedy. They include the study of ourselves and finding contentment in our lives. To help us find this sense of balance and wellness, we need to move our bodies, breathe intentionally, find an internal state of awareness, and practice where we place our focus.
Yoga helps learners through the journey of being a student. Transitioning from childhood into adulthood comes with a great deal of ‘chatter'. It is my hope that these pages empower teachers to adopt yogic practices in their own lives and in turn help learners explore techniques to still their thoughts, find balance, and focus on learning. In these pages you will find practical activities that use yoga to embody social and emotional learning; techniques that can be ritualized into every class.
